When you decide you are going to set goals for yourself it takes some work to make them effective and workable for you. Setting goals is like setting up your life for a lifetime of actions. So setting personal goals needs to be about parts of your life that are personal and important to you. If you set goals that have to relationship to your life you simply won’t pay any attention to them. Setting a personal goal will generally fall into an area of your life that is personal such as a goal regarding your family or family related. It could be about the physical you or the mental you, perhaps career related or finance related or perhaps it may be spiritual goals or social goals. These are all areas of life that affect you personally.

Then there are the goals that are set for you by your employer which will affect your career or your pay or your yearly bonus or even a promotion but these will be shared goals not purely personal goals. This means that you will join in the goal setting process at work but this goal will not impact you personally but also impact your work group or the entire business structure. In the best of circumstances this will be a mutually agreed upon process for it to be successful but in too many cases it is an activity that is set by someone else and handed to you. In this case you will have to determine if you believe in these goals and more important can you really achieve them. If they make you very unhappy you have basically two choices. One is to review them, then make nay changes you think are necessary and then schedule an appointment with your boss to discuss your goals and hope you can come to some mutual agreement. Your other option is to find other work. Your Choice.

Personal goals must be set so that you can achieve them. Yes, you can set them quite high but they can’t be unattainable. For example, if you have no desire or inclination to attend college or take classes necessary to get a license or certification for a nurse and you are positive this is the case then you certainly can’t make your goal becoming a certified nurse because you will never reach that goal. This is more in the realm of dreaming not setting realistic life goals.

When you do set goals make sure they are positive goals and when written down they read positively. For example, if you write that your goal is to not eat a lot of food at meals that is a negative. Don’t eat is negative. Instead write down that you will eat from the healthy groups of foods and be specific about vegetables, greens, portion sizes and times you can eat and not snack this becomes a positive goal because you are saying what you can eat when and then set the goal as weight loss or better health.
